Why Colonies Are Building with Precast Concrete

Why Hutterite Colonies Are Building with Precast Concrete.jpg

More and more Colonies across Alberta are choosing precast concrete buildings over wood construction for their homes, workshops and agricultural barns. Why? Because precast concrete walls can be produced quickly and economically, installed easily, and the structures last longer when compared to wood-frame buildings.

Custom-engineered, with less construction time, for specific needs

When it’s time to build a new community or upgrade existing structures, we know colonies like yours encounter a really common challenge: you live in remote, rural locations, and general contractors and trades professionals are in short supply.

And even if you’d like to use concrete for your next project, you may not be an expert in drafting, engineering and designing plans for precast concrete buildings. That’s where our team comes in with custom-engineered plans to meet your exact needs. Our commercial precast concrete walls and foundations, better known as Superior Walls®, come pre-insulated, custom-manufactured and are installed in weeks instead of months. This speeds up construction time considerably.

While we can take care of fully constructing the buildings, colonies also have the option to use their own labour for installing trusses, completing roofs, or pouring the slab.

Make agricultural barns an investment, not just an expense

Precast concrete barns are economical, in more ways than one. Beyond saving time in the construction phase, a precast concrete livestock barn is a wiser investment. Wood-frame barns provide some return on investment when it comes to raising chickens or cattle, but concrete barns outperform wood barns simply because you won’t need to replace them nearly as often.

Here’s why: Concrete is resistant to water, so it’s easier to keep a livestock barn dry (and therefore less likely to grow mold). Their durability means they won’t burn or rot like a wood-frame structure. Concrete also keeps out rodents and insects, which will help your Colony make sure your agricultural buildings meet provincial and national health and safety standards. Not only that, concrete buildings usually attract lower insurance rates.

Customized for the look you want

While plenty of buildings in your colony can be precast concrete, they don’t all need to look the same. Our customers choose us because we can add different finishes — like brush or stencil — to the wall. It’s also possible for another tradesperson to add stucco or tin to the concrete itself. The initial designs are customizable too, and we work with Colonies to create the buildings they want and need to serve their communities.
